Funnier than the black death!

Monty Python’s Spamalot gallops back into Trinity Theatre (to the sound of banging coconut shells). Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot is a kind-of new musical with a book by Eric Idle and an entirely new score for the new production, (well, almost) created by Eric Idle and John Du Prez.

Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, witch burnings (cancelled due to health and safety) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features fantastic tunes more magical than a Camelot convention, including He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song (Reader’s Digest Poll 2010 – before it went bust), Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

Producer's/Director's Notes

Wow! Here we are with the biggest show I have produced at Trinity! We have the biggest set – when Arthur refers to a “very expensive forest” he isn’t joking! – the largest number of costumes (116 and counting!) and most importantly the largest professional company that I have had at Trinity. I think it is important for us to recognise that this show is “made in Tunbridge Wells” using a combination of local professional talent as well as people from further afield. This demonstrates what we can do and with a few returning faces from Oliver! and lots of new friends the level of talent that we can now attract. This has been a joyous company to work with – everyone working so hard and buoyed up by the inspired lunacy of Monty Python – that also has a subtle and wry intelligence behind it.

It is invidious to single people out but it has been great work with David and Sally again – I have known and worked with them both for over 30 years – but two firsts – this is the first time I have directed David and the first time we have appeared on stage together! Tony – as ever has been an inspiration and we are incredibly lucky to have all his years of West End experience at our disposal!

A show like this brings the whole Trinity team together , Admin, FOH, Marketing, Accounts, Box Office and Technical – what you see on stage is a testimony to all their hard work and enthusiasm – this show would not be possible without all of them!

Director's Notes

Throughout my directing career I have waited for the chance to work on a deep, meaningful piece of theatre – to create drama that will be ground-breaking and have the kind of gravitas that will draw from the very sinews of my skills and test me to the depths of my soul. That wait goes on.
Instead I find myself alongside Trinity’s resident Fagin, both trying to out-create each other in bringing Spamalot to life on stage.

We are both wasting our time. This show is best left alone and just performed as written by Monty Python’s brilliant Eric Idle.

All we have to do is remember the lines and not bump into the rabbit…
